In Australia the majority of thyroid problems are caused by autoimmune diseases and made worse by nutritional deficiencies., thyroid hormeones are responsible for controlling the basic activity of each cell in the body, including metabolismm, growth and development. The thyroid gland requires large quantities of tyrosine, iodine and selenium in order to manufacture it's hormones. Tyrosine is an amino acid and the building blocks of protein that is found in protein rich foods such as red meat, fish, poultry and also almonds, avocados and bananas. Iodine- a deficiencey can result in underactive thyroid glan, good sources of iodine are seafood (from the ocean) sea weeds, kelp, nori and wakami. Selenium is required to convert T4 into it's active form T3 if you are deficient in selenium you will not manufacture enough T3 and may experience symptoms of underactive thyroid, very few foods are rich in selenium but Brazil nuts, crab and salmon provide some selenium.
So eat up the good stuff....
